Frequently Asked Questions

      What does Fee-Only Mean?
"Fee-Only means we do not, under any circumstances, accept commissions for selling products. This eliminates conflicts of       interest and allows us to select the best investments for you without promoting any products.

      What is a CFP®?
A CFP® is a professional Certified Financial Planner™ who has met the following requirements:

  • Education: CFP® professionals must complete a comprehensive course of study at a college or university offering curriculum approved by the CFP® Board. Once certified, a CFP® is required to complete 30 hours of continuing education every 2 years.

  • Examination: CFP® practitioners must pass a comprehensive two-day, 10-hour Certification Examination.  The exam covers the financial planning process, tax planning, employee benefits and retirement panning, estate planning, investment management and insurance.

  • Experience: CFP® professionals must have three years minimum experience in the financial planning field prior to receiving certification.

  • Ethics: CFP® practitioners agree to abide by a strict code of professional conduct. The CFP Board also performs a background check during this process, and each individual must disclose any investigations or legal proceedings related to their professional or business conduct.

    Why should I hire a CFP®?

Anyone can call themselves a "financial planner," however it does not mean they are "certified" or even qualified to offer financial planning advice. Only those who have fulfilled the schooling, background check, certification and renewal requirements of the Certified Financial Planner Board™ can use the CFP® title or display the CFP® certification marks. When you select a financial planner, you need to feel confident that the person you choose is competent, qualified, and ethical. The CFP® certification provides that sense of security by allowing only those who meet rigorous criteria the right to use the CFP® designation.

    Are your fees tax deductable?

The Internal Revenue Code permits an itemized deduction for tax and/or investment advice in the miscellaneous section of Schedule A.  It is subject to a 2% floor of the adjusted gross income on a personal tax return. See your tax advisor for further information.

Is there a cost for the first meeting?

The first meeting is a telephone consultation to determine whether or not we can be of service to you, and to allow you to evaluate us. During this telephone meeting no specific financial advice will be offered, but you will speak to a Certified Financial Planner™ who will explain the financial planning process, as well as the fee structure and available services. You will have an opportunity to ask questions and discuss your financial planning needs, and together, you and the CFP® will determine whether Nelson Financial Planning Services can help you. This consultation is complimentary and involves no obligation or cost to you.

How long does a typical meeting last?

Because each client's financial situation is unique, there is no typical meeting length.  The first "in person" meeting is generally the longest because there is so much information to be covered; please allow a minimum of 3 hours.

Should I bring my spouse to the meeting?

Yes, if at all possible. It is very important that you and your spouse, as a couple, be involved in all aspects of financial planning.

    How much do you charge?

A comprehensive financial plan could cost anywhere from $1,000 to $5,000.  It is difficult to give an exact quote without an introductory meeting to evaluate the client's financial objectives and the types of services they request and need. Our hourly rate is $225, and the amount of time is dependent on the complexity of your financial situation and the level of service selected. If you select the retainer option, the annual rate is $2,500.

Does NFPS have net worth minimums?

Currently there is no net worth requirement for hourly planning and investment management.

    Do you do group advising?

Yes, we offer group advising in the form of seminar sessions.

    Do you accept referrals?

Absolutely, and we greatly appreciate them. Most new clients are referred by existing clients or by a trusted professional advisor.

If I don't live in Maryland can you still work with me?

Yes, we are able to provide financial advising services throughout the United States.

Still have questions? Please don't hesitate to contact us.
